Is it just me, or does anyone else use Greek yogurt in place of sour cream?
All Greek yogurts though are not created equal. If you are eating it for the health benefits, the most important ingredient may be acidophilus and not all Greek yogurts have it, so always read the ingredient list. I find the brands with it are more expensive, but if you are trying to give your body important nutrients, then it's worth the extra cost.
The main thing I've changed this year in regards to my diet, is making conscious choices about what I put in my body and I've cut out most of the things that offer no value. I have a check list for my day, things I absolutely must put into my body. Sometimes, though, I find the amount of food I'm eating every day to be hard to accomplish, so I cheat some by throwing Greek yogurt onto my other meals as I said, in place of sour cream.
Whatever works!
I guess I'm dieting in reverse. Rather than focusing
on what I should avoid, which I always think is a bad idea, I focus on what I need to get into my body. I know I need protein, I know I need some fats, olive oils and avocado are my favorites. I know I want a wide array of fresh vegetables, i try to make my plate as colorful as possible, eating not just green, but red and orange and purple and yellow as well. I eat dairy, so I try to have a glass of organic milk everyday. When it comes to animal products, I find it's always worth it to spend the money on organic. It's better for you and it's better for the animal, which for me, is important.
So I start out my day with my little mental checklist and for instance, for breakfast I try to get at least three different types of vegetables on my plate, well by the time I saute up my mushrooms, onions, red peppers and celery, my plate is already full. I add a small protein source, of late it's been 2 scrambled eggs, and yes I eat the yolks, then depending on my mood, I sometimes have one slice of toast. I'm trying to lay low on the complex carbs, not eliminate them, but be consious of them. Also, I've taken to drinking green tea, so that has to come before any sodas or other lesser drink choices.
Thing is, by the time I'm done, my plate is so full, I really don't have the room for biscuits, bacon, sausage and cheese... I fill up the first slots with my must haves, then layer in the other things on top very sparingly. When I partake of something decadent, I recognize that it's not being kind to my body, just my taste buds, so I eat a smaller portion, enjoy the hell out of it, then move on.
It's not necessarily an easy thing to do, and if you're stressed or medicating at all with food, it can be damn near impossible, but I've found this dieting in reverse, keeping my mind focused on what I need to eat every day, it fills me up before I have room for anything void in nutrients and so far I've been losing weight very easily. Not only that, my energy level is up and I just feel better on the whole.
Food truly is our body and mind's fuel source, so think about your choices carefully and don't expect your body to perform like a Maserati if you fuel it like the junker you picked up for your teenage son's pizza delivery job. What you put in your body matters, try to stay conscious of it when you can.
